Playing with Fondant

These dinosaurs were made after the Dinosaur fondant cake , it is part of my experiment with fondant, to test how long the fondant dinosaurs can last on room temperature (So that I know whether is feasible for me to make a fondant cake for my son or not, is my last thought to have a bleeding cake for his birthday). As you see in the first picture, the fondant figurines bleed ... it was just out from the fridge.

You can see the blue dinosaur bleeds more than yellow one, this is because blue food colouring was added to the blue dinosaur. At that time I've no idea that I should use the anti-bleed food colouring instead of the normal food colouring.

What is the snowy things on the figurines? Is powder sugar and cornstarch! Well they didn't help in stopping the fondant from melting. Not in Singapore. And I said it makes them ...look messy!

One finding from the Internet said that, if the cake figurine is to be consume later than use fondant as it is soft. However if the figurine is not for consume then use gumpaste as it will be harder and stable than fondant. Is this true?  I guess I need to explore with gumpaste as well.

It was ok when I first added the blue food colouring, just you can feel the fondant is softer than the normal one.

It feel dry and beautiful when I finished with the figurine.

My triceratop starts to bleed, oh poor thing! I place them into the freezer and then to the fridge before taking out to room temperature. This is as suggested by a web forum, but I tell you, this is NOT working!

My blue T-Rex becomes sticky and shinny, oh no!

I need to continue experiment with my fondant to find a way to contain the bleed!

    1. thanks Edith! I try to leave it outside, the fondant which didn't add any food colouring stop sweating. But I notice that the fondant which I mixed with dark chocolate fondant still bleed a lot. Walton fondant seems able to stop sweat and the Phoon Huat dark chocolate fondant not able to. Is the brand for fondant really matter?

  4. i wished that i can help but i rarely deal with fondant. But years ago, i attended a class and did a buttercake covered with fondant, brought it home but not intended to eat it just to see how long it can last..i left the cake in a cool area for about a week, it stayed fine and when i cut the cake, i was surprised to see the cake was still soft and no signs of molding. I was told that the sugars in the fondant acts like kind of preservative to protect the cake so at that time, we were told that we didnt have to fridge the fondant covered cake and also the figurines..

    1. Lena, thanks for leaving me this message. Yes, the cake is fresh and soft because of the fondant. I remember the fondant cake which we bought for Gabriel for his 3 yrs old birthday didn't sweat or bleed just sitting on my dining table overnight too. I'm not sure could it be the fondant which I bought matter. I bought Satin Ice, Phoon Huat and Walton brands' fondant. Satin Ice is the one not yet try on. can you recall which fondant you used for the fondant class? If I couldn't contain the sweating fondant, I have to move away from fondant cake for Gabriel's birthday.

  10. I took up fondant classes a long time ago and the teacher did thought us to add some gumpaste to the fondant as it will be easier to work with and it won't bleed. I think the humidity plays a role too. But I think your creations are still beautiful. By the way, I sent you an email. Hope you get it and thanks.

  11. Sorry Ah Tze, ignored the last part of my comment. I sent the email to another blogger and not you. Sorry about that :)

  12. I know It may be a bit late, but i just came across your blog. I live in QLD Australia and it gets very hot and humid here. I have learnt to but all my gumpaste or fondant sculptures in a box. I just use a wheetbix box but what ever you have will be fine. The cardboard draws up the moisture in the air before it reaches the fondant. GOODLUCK
